Chief Medical Examiner
The Government of the District of Columbia is seeking a Chief Medical Examiner (CME) to head the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). The CME is appointed by the Mayor to a 6-year statutory term of office. The appointee to this position is subject to confirmation by the Council of the District of Columbia (Council).
The CME is responsible for directing a 24-hour forensic medical program, including autopsy functions; medicolegal investigation of deaths; certification of cause of death; provision of expert court testimony; coordination of mass fatality planning; and medicolegal training of law enforcement and other professional personnel. Additionally, the CME is responsible for managing a staff of medical examiners, toxicology personnel, medicolegal investigators, a histopathology technician, autopsy assistants, legal, administrative, and clerical personnel.
Minimum Qualifications: The CME shall be a physician licensed to practice medicine in the District of Columbia, and shall be certified in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology or be eligible for such certification. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience in the practice of forensic pathology and have performed a commensurate number of autopsies of varying complexity. The candidate will also have demonstrated familiarity with accreditation requirements.
Salary Range: $185,000 to $279,900
This position requires that the selected individual become a domiciliary of the District of Columbia. The selected individual must either: (1) be a domiciliary of the District of Columbia at the time of appointment and maintain such domicile during the period of appointment; or (2) become a domiciliary of the District of Columbia within 180 days of the date of appointment and maintain such domicile during the period of appointment. The individual nominated shall not become subject to the domicile requirement until after Council confirmation and processing of a personnel action appointing him or her to the position.

SALARY REDUCTION OF REEMPLOYED ANNUITANTS: An individual selected for employment in the District government on or after January 1, 1980, who is receiving an annuity under District government civilian retirement system, shall have his or her pay reduced by the amount of annuity allocable to the period of employment.
