Capital City Fellows Program
The Capital City Fellows Program (CCFP) is a mayoral initiative to attract recent graduates of master's degree programs in public administration, public policy, urban planning, and related fields to work for the city of Washington, DC. Candidates compete for two-year fellowship appointments during which they complete four six-month rotations in different city agencies, including: the Office of the City Administrator, Department of Human Resources, Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Department of Human Services, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Transportation, Department of Corrections, Office of Property Management, the Metropolitan Police Department, among many others.
In addition to on-the-job training in their host agencies, Fellows are given unique opportunities to meet with high-level city officials and participate in educational and professional development seminars. The program prepares Fellows to meet the challenges of local government public service and develops management talent for the city.
Fellows begin their service in July of each year and are selected through a competitive application process that includes two stages:
- Submission of an application package including, but not limited to, transcripts, resume, writing samples, and references; and
- Participation in an all-day interview session in March comprised of an individual interview, group exercise, and writing project.
Candidates are evaluated on their academic records, strength of their application materials, capacity for leadership, potential for future professional growth, and demonstrated commitment to a public service career.
Fellows are required to live in the District within 180 days of appointment. Capital City Fellows receive an initial appointment in the Excepted Service pay schedule at a salary of Fifty Thousand dollars ($50,000) for the first year with a 4% increase in the second year. Fellows are eligible for benefits afforded to all regular city government employees such as health insurance, annual and sick leave.
The deadline for submitting applications is January 4, 2008. No additional applications will be accepted for the July 2008 fellowships after this date without exception.
Capital City Fellows Engineering Track In 2003, the Capital City Fellows Program launched a new track for recent graduates with master's degrees in engineering.
